Initiating Conversation

Twelve people
sitting outside.
Crickets and toads
chirp in
our silence.
I turn to my friend.
What movie
should everyone
watch once?
Schindler's List.
Others chime in
submitting their answers.
Laughter cricks
between the crickets.
I started
a conversation
in a large group.
First time
for everything.
Voices hum together,
their own melodies.
Some soft
whispering voices.
Other voices
thrum through
the wooden bench
I'm sharing.
Excitement rises.
Voices increase
their volume.
Waitress comes out
calms us down.
We’re too loud
for the neighbors.
I'm sorry,
we’re bonding
so loudly.
But thank you
for letting us talk
just a little
longer.
